Dear Colleagues,
As a faculty member in the Department of Biology at Nankai University, a prestigious institution in China, it is my great pleasure to recommend one of my favorite students for your PhD program.
In September 2004, Miss Zhang was enrolled in my General Biology course—the first professional course she took in this field. She demonstrated genuine enthusiasm for the subject. I conducted classes in an open and interactive format, and she consistently participated actively and passionately in answering questions. Miss Zhang is bright, energetic, and enthusiastic, never hesitant to express her opinions. She does not shy away from points she finds questionable. Beyond that, she frequently generates original ideas on various topics and shares her innovative thoughts with me after class.
At the end of the course, I asked students to write an essay on their understanding of biology. I was particularly impressed by Miss Zhang's essay, which was both insightful and persuasive. Her meticulous research incorporated dozens of references from biological literature. In the essay, she expanded her creative thinking about the current state of biological research and the various branches within the field. This reflects her strong creative, logical, and scientific thinking abilities. I am pleased to note that Miss Zhang has a clear grasp of General Biology, which is fully evident in her essay. She received a full mark for her work, and other students naturally regarded it as a model.
I believe Miss Zhang's diligence, passion, and dedication make her the ideal candidate your program is seeking. I therefore recommend her without any reservation. I would greatly appreciate your favorable consideration of her application.
Sincerely yours,

To Whom It May Concern,
Having served as Dean of Stonewell College, I have had the privilege of knowing Hannah Smith over the past four years. She has consistently excelled as a student and contributed greatly to our school community. I am delighted to recommend Hannah for admission to your graduate program. I am confident that she will continue to thrive in her studies. Hannah is a dedicated student, and her grades have been exemplary thus far. In class, she has proven to be a proactive leader who can successfully develop and implement plans. Hannah has also assisted us in the admissions office, where she demonstrated leadership by counseling new and prospective students. Her advice has been immensely helpful to these students, many of whom have taken the time to share their comments with me about her pleasant and encouraging attitude. For these reasons, I offer my highest recommendation for Hannah without reservation. Her drive and abilities will truly be an asset to your institution. If you have any questions regarding this recommendation, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Roger Fleming
Dean of Stonewell College

I am pleased to write this letter of recommendation for my former student, Miss Nan Li, who graduated from this College with an L.B. degree in June 1978. Miss Li was admitted to the Department of Law of this College in 1974 through a highly competitive entrance examination, which is conducted annually and open to the entire nation. Even among such a selective group, Miss Li distinguished herself. As professor and dean of the College, I have access to her records of academic work and moral conduct. In her fourth year, I instructed her in Anglo-American Laws on Trespass, so I have come to know her quite well. Miss Li's performance, like that in many other courses she took, was excellent, with a superior grade of 86 for the first semester and 84 for the second semester.
In our university and in other universities here, 80 is considered an A—the highest level. As far as I know, Miss Li wishes to continue her studies in law for an advanced degree. I am confident that she possesses sufficient prerequisite knowledge for the subject and certainly has the ability to undertake the study. I unreservedly recommend Miss Li and would appreciate your favorable consideration of her application.
